The Italian Mafia Has Started Accepting Gay Mobsters

Many mobsters also love attending drag clubs, according to an investigator.

You've likely heard the term "gay mafia" bandied about by anti-LGBTQ critics, claiming the community has outsized political and social influence. Turns out that phrase just got yet another meaning, as a prosecutor in Italy has found the mob increasingly accepting of gay members.

"The mafia have evolved along with society," anti-mafia investigator Nicola Gratteri told The Sunday Times, according to the New York Post. "Gays can be accepted now, even as foot soldiers, so long as they don’t parade it in public."

Gratteri said he intercepted "passionate" letters between a crime boss and a young lieutenant, and that his eavesdropping on phone calls revealed many members of the mafia enjoy frequenting drag clubs. The child of one crime family is also reportedly a drag queen who performs under the name "Lady Godiva."

Being gay or bisexual has been grounds for murder within the mafia in the past, and according to Gratteri some of the older mobsters are still not accepting.

"It undermines their image of themselves as tough, virile guys," he said.

New Jersey mob boss John “Johnny Boy” D’Amato was killed in 1992 after his girlfriend told another member of the crime family that he was bisexual.
