Shawn Ashmore Wants To Play Iceman Gay In Next "X-Men" Movie

What's a little frostbite?

Shawn Ashmore, who played Iceman in four of the X-Men movies, wants to bring the frosty mutant out of the closet on the big screen.

The 36 year-old actor was last seen as Iceman (Bobby Drake) in 2014's time traveling X-Men: Days of Future Past, and even though he's sitting out the latest film, X-Men: Apocalypse, he told BANG Showbiz that he would love to play Iceman as gay the next time he joined the team of mutant superheroes:

"What I think is interesting is that the X-Men have always been about diversity, it's the key message of the film. For the X-Men what makes us different is what makes us great, so if Iceman or Bobby came out in a film I think it would stay very much on point and on message about what the films are about. We did establish him as having a love interest with Rogue and with Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat) so it would have to be handled well to have that shift in his sexuality work for viewers. I think it could be really interesting.

Ashmore's revelation isn't all that surprising since he already voiced his support last year when Bobby came out as gay after teammate Jean Grey telepathically heard his inner thoughts in the Marvel comic series All-New X-Men.

There was also Bobby's coming out-as a mutant-scene in 2003's X2:

Ashmore shares that there have not been any talks about another X-Men movie after Apocalypse, but says that it is a possibility, adding: "I would love to play the character again. I’m always interested in X-Men, it’s always been such a huge part of my career and life to be honest."
