Trump Thinks Pete Buttigieg Could Be His Opponent in 2020

"But it'll be interesting to see it unfold."

In a recent radio interview, Donald Trump said that he thinks he'd "like running against" Pete Buttigieg, the openly gay Democrat from Indiana who recently announced his run for office in 2020.

Speaking to David Webb on SiriusXM, the President addressed the crop of Democrats vying for the party nomination for the 2020 election cycle. He speculated that he'll end up running against Sen. Bernie Sanders, former Vice President Joe Biden—or Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana.

"I think I'd like running against him, too," Trump said, referring to Buttigieg as the "mayor from Indiana." "But it'll be interesting to see it unfold."

As The Hill notes, this is the first time the President has directly addressed Buttigieg's run for office. Trump also took to Twitter on April 16 to drag Sanders and Biden, calling the Democratic frontrunners "Crazy Bernie Sanders" and "Sleepy Joe Biden."

If Buttigieg scores the party nomination for the Democrats, the 37-year-old will become the youngest presidential candidate and the first openly gay Democrat to run for office in United States history. Prospects aren't looking too shabby for him, either: His campaign has continued to gain momentum, with recent polls putting him in third place behind Sanders and Biden, who has yet to formally confirm his candidacy.

He even earned his spot at the first Democratic National Committee's (DNC) 2020 presidential debate all the way back in March.
